DIGITAL HEALTH MEETS INSURTECH – MEET THE ARCHITECTS OF OUR FUTURE HEALTHSYSTEM

It’s not often that we start sweating before an event. But for the event “InsurTech meets Digital Health” we were pleasantly surprised at first by the number of registrations, but in the meantime we were afraid that we would not be able to offer space to all interested parties. In the end, however, we presented ourselves once again in WERK1 as a competent host.

INSURTECH MEETS DIGITAL HEALTH

But from the very beginning, InsurTech and Digital Health have a firm place in the WERK1 thanks to our W1>>Forward programs – what could be more obvious than bringing the two worlds together and this is exactly what we did. On February 19th, together with our partners, the InsurTech Hub Munich and Roche, we organized the first official meetup for the digitization of the insurance and healthcare industry at WERK1. With over 350 registrations – including a waiting list of 70 people – we were afraid that we would not be able to accommodate all interested participants. But we didn’t have to turn anyone away, and in the end all of them were accommodated in our event space, which was filled to the last seat.

FROM THE PITCH TO A PANEL DISCUSSION

The stage initially belonged to four up-and-coming startups: Fibricheck, Ottonova, SkinVision, Teleclinic, some well-known names in startup communities and all of them pitched their concepts in front of assembled experts. These came partly from large companies in the industry, but also from potential investors. Short keynotes from Munich Re and Schön Klinik gave an insight into the current challenges facing both sectors. In the following expert panel, moderated by Dr. Dominik Pförringer, Benedikt Zacher – CEO of BK Ventures, Dr. Jochen Hurlebaus – Head of Central R&D Services – Innovation & IP Management at Roche Diagnostics, Carol Wildhagen – CEO and co-founder of Ariana Health and Dr. Regina Vetters – Head of Digital and Innovation bei BARMER discussed the need to digitalise both industries and gave tips on how to be successful in their field of business. All in all, a round program in which almost all those present found themselves in one way or another.

Around 9 p. m. the official program was over and everyone who was present could enjoy a nice round of snacks and drinks. There was also time for networking and direct exchange among each other.

We are looking forward to continue to provide new impulses for the insurance industry and the health care sector from WERK1 with creative startup concepts and a platform for direct exchange. Our WERK1 community can only benefit from this as well.

EVENT FEEDBACK

Thanks to organization via Meetup we got a lot of interesting feedback directly after the event – thank you very much. Here are some excerpts:

FROM WERK1 ON A BIG TOUR: SMARTLANE PROVIDES THE INTELLIGENT SOLUTION FOR THE LOGISTICS INDUSTRY

When experience, entrepreneurial spirit, the right idea and the necessary know-how from the fields of IT, logistics and transport come together, the framework for a successful digital start-up project is in place – as in the case of Smartlane. Together with a little jump-start from WERK1, it becomes a common success story.

Since mid 2015, the founding team has been developing a solution for automated, digital delivery management. The underlying technology is based on the combined knowledge of more than 20 years of research at the interface between IT and transport at the Technical University of Munich. Smartlane uses Big Data technologies to integrate highly dynamic internal and external data. Routes can thus be optimized in real time – with regard to the resource utilization of the fleet, fuel costs, traffic volume and much more – and drivers can be controlled in a targeted manner. The team’s goal is to establish the standard for modern delivery and service logistics with the most intelligent and user-friendly software. The result is simple and impresses the customers at the same time: Reliably high service quality, sales increase, cost reduction and relieving the employees.

Smartlane’s vision: The complete automation of the logistics industry.
Florian Schimandl, co-founder and managing director of Smartlane:

With its SaaS solution, Smartlane combines maximum automation, outstanding intelligence and state-of-the-art usability in a single product. With our cloud-based software, we offer medium-sized companies in the field of supply logistics the easiest entry into digitalisation. It is possible for our customers to understand the trend of on-demand logistics not as an insurmountable challenge, but as a major and above all sustainable opportunity and to use it profitably.

WELL DEVELOPED AT WERK1

With moving into WERK1 in January 2016, Smartlane also had access to financing coaching – carried out by BayStartUP. Successfully: At the end of 2016, the startup was able to present a successful first financing round by a family office. After the transformation of the UG into a GmbH, the team also expanded – the first employees in the areas of marketing/PR and design/branding were hired and a larger office space at WERK1 was taken up. In addition to the team, the software has also grown and in the middle of 2017 the first version of Smartlane was launched. Even that with success. In the meantime, Smartlane is represented throughout Germany, partner of DER KURIER (the express division of GLS) and also involved in the Deutsche Bahn for the optimization of freight wheel tours. In order to further expand sales and development – and thus grow – a second round of financing is now in the pipeline, which will again be accompanied by BayStartUP.

SMARTLANE AND THE WERK1

At WERK1, Smartlane is a great example of how we want to support ambitious founders in realizing their vision: Attractive and affordable offices of any size and the ability to offer more room for growing businesses in the short term, access to our community and effective coaching to overcome difficulties in the early stages of start-up. But let’s ask the founders of Smartlane themselves:

Why do you have your offices at WERK1 and would you recommend this step to other startups in the digital sector?

Florian Schimandl – CEO Smartland

Florian from Smartlane: Definitely. We can consistently recommend WERK1 and the associated infrastructure. Be it the regularly taking place tasty Werksfrühstück, the offer of workshops and events, the atmosphere in general,… the WERK1 offers in our opinion a great platform for startups to exchange information. Even though the topics of the individual startups in WERK1 are broadly diversified, we still have to realize that the problems are mostly the same and an exchange between them is therefore very valuable. In addition to the exchange of ideas, WERK1 also offers the opportunity to grow – a very important aspect for startups. Therefore we can only agree with the statement “the WERK1 is probably the most startup-friendly place in Munich”.

INTERNATIONAL STARTUPS AT WERK1

“Batch Zero” of the program was launched on 5th February 2018 and until the end of June magnificent international startups will be able to use the facilities at WERK1 free of charge to work on their concepts with the help of Roche mentors and experts from WERK1. Our new residents are: FibriCheck from Belgium, Inveox here from Munich, Medicus from Austria, Sagivtech from Israel and StethoMe from Poland – all startups with enormous disruptive potential for the entire industry.

At the beginning, all startups were able to present their concepts to an interested audience and the first working rounds with the mentors took place.

If the pilot phase is successful, the accelerator will be strategically developed and expanded together with other partners from the healthcare sector.

GLOBAL GAME JAM AT WERK1 – A WORLDWIDE ORGANIZED HACKATRON

Once again the Global Game Jam was on the agenda: a worldwide organized hackatron, where beginners and professionals could develop video games together from Friday to Sunday. The Games/Bavaria team organised the event over the entire weekend at WERK1. A total of 804 locations – networked worldwide – took part in the event. Special highlight: Due to the professional implementation of the live stream, the Munich stream was part of the official live stream of the organizers for several hours and was shown and mentioned several times.

We wold like to thank Games/Bavaria for the professional organization. Some fabulous games have been created that you can see here: Website
A total of 10 partly elaborately planned and executed games have been created.

In 2018, the Global Game Jam was celebrating an anniversary: for ten years now, this special form of creative game development has been taking place around the world once a year. The participants are committed to developing a game and sharing it with the world in 48 hours. The WERK1 was the only event location in Munich – the excitement and enthusiasm of the participants was correspondingly high – an important day for the game developer location Bavaria.

In addition to the technical topics, the mixed teams are an important part of the event. Beginners can work with industry veterans to gain first insights and make important contacts. At the same time, professionals have the chance to think “out of the box” and try out completely new genres or mechanics in addition to their everyday projects. This is certainly one of the main reasons why Global Game Jam has been one of the most popular events of its kind for years.

Thanks to CipsoftElgato we were again able to provide a fully catered venue with 48h Livestream, extracts of which can be found here.
