WERK1 celebrates Demo Day of the first Digital Health Accelerator in Munich

It’s Demo Time! WERK1, Roche and Plug’n Play jointly organized the first Digital Health Accelertor in Munich and after months of concentrated work, five outstanding startups presented their results on June 7th. It’s absolutely clear that our eventspace is reaching its limits. Fortunately, however, we have suitable alternatives in the factory district: In the Technikum right next door, the startups presented themselves to more than 350 interested people and then celebrated themselves and the results well into the night – well deserved!

In addition to start-up support and coworking, the accelerator programs are an essential part of the work at WORK1. After the successes in the InsurTech area, we discovered Digital Health as a new topic for us in 2018 based on the successful launch of the Future X Healthcare Event (www.fxh2017.com). Together with Roche, one of the leading companies in the healthcare industry and Plug and Play, the world’s largest provider of accelerator programs, we launched the first Digital Health Accelerator for Munich.

The startups worked on their projects for five months from WORK1 with the help of mentors, and from 7 June it was time to present the results. The right location was quickly found with the technical centre on the factory premises. All in all, it was a long day. We started with a press brunch to present the results to the trade press in a relaxed atmosphere. Freshly strengthened, the event continued quickly in front of a large audience. After the greetings of Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs Franz Josef Pschierer and some board members, the startups had the floor. One pitch followed the other and it quickly became clear what a professional level each of the young companies had reached in the short space of time. The quality of the lectures, videos and presentations was outstanding. But even after that it was not over yet. Only rarely do you have so many leading representatives of the health industry in one place and so the rest of the evening was used until late into the night for networking and deserved celebrations.

DR. FLORIAN MANN ABOUT THE ROLE OF WERK1 AT THE DIGITAL HEALTH ACCELERATOR

“After the experience with the InsurTech Accelerator and the construction of the InsurTech Hub supported by de:hub Initiaitve, we chose a very fast and pragmatic path. Working closely with Roche, we developed a tailor-made programme within 2 months, based on the requirements of startups that had already been pre-selected and Roche. Here the focus was on collaboration and pilot projects with strong contacts to Roche and external experts. Our experience helped us a lot to find the right mentors and coaches for the 5 startups of Batch Zero.

Digital Health is definitely one of the most regulated and complex market fields! There are a lot of stakeholders and parties that make up the vast ecosystem. Hats off to the start-ups who dare to build their business here!

It is very important to be flexible with the program structure and to respond to the individual needs of startups and partners at an early stage. Only then can the program bring real added value. An extensive network and a good feel for matchmaking (bringing the right people together at the table) are essential elements to create a significant added value for everyone and to take it to the next level.”.

TO BE CONTINUED

The representatives of Roche’s Executive Board who were present emphasised time and again that an accelerator does not help the startups on its own. They praised the creative cooperation, in particular the technical know-how and the attitude of all five start-ups, from which companies like Roche could benefit enormously. After the successful pilot phase in WERK1, the Accelerator will be continued with Plug’n Play and Batch 1.

FIRST DIGITAL HEALTH ACCELERATOR IN MUNICH FROM ROCHE, WERK1 AND PLUG AND PLAY

WHAT IS BEHIND THE DIGITAL HEALTH ACCELERATOR PROGRAM IN MUNICH?

Based on the successful start of Future X Healthcare Event (www.fxh2017.com) initiated by Roche in November 2017 we combined the power of Roche, leading the healthtech industry with WERK1 and Plug and Play, the world’s largest Accelerator and established  a new Digital Health Accelerator at WERK1

The main idea of the program is to provide a learning and exchange platform between Digital Health startups and experts in this field. Everything turns around passion. Whatever business you set up, you must have a passion for it and this is exactly what the Digital Health Accelerator Program aims. By involving genuine startups into our program, we are not discovering the healthcare future but creating a new one. Together we are moving forward to the future.

“For large corporations, one of the key opportunities of working with startups is to iteratively develop solutions in an agile way. In the Batch Zero of the Digital Health Accelerator Roche is co-creating solutions with 5 transformative startups from all over Europe in WERK1, which is provides the ideal environment for it.”.Jochen Hurlebaus – Program Head of Digital Health Accelerator and Head of Innovation Management at Roche Diagnostics

W1 Forward Digital Health Program is a tailored five months program, that helps startups to explore the market insights and learn during the first, intense four weeks (exploration phase) and in the next four months (co-creation) to work systematically on joint use cases with Roche Pilot “Owners”.

“The Roche Digital Health Accelerator Program promises to become one of the few successful accelerators I have seen in the last decade. In my eyes, the reason is that the people behind the program are driven primarily by curiosity and not by self-interest. It goes without saying that this interest must be served too – but rather as a consequence than as sole purpose of the program. This attitude is key for fostering novel business models.”
Dr. Benedikt Zacher – Mentor

Currently there are five startups working in the program:

1. Fibricheck

Fibricheck is a medically certified screening and monitoring application on prescription for the detection of irregular heart rhythms, including atrial fibrillation

2. inveox

Inveox provides automation of sample preparation in Histopatholog

3. Medicus.ai

Medicus.ai is an AI-based platform that explains and interprets medical reports and health data, turning numbers into meaningful insights

4. SagivTech

SagivTech provides research and development solutions in the fields of computer vision, machine learning and deep learning as well as hard-core code optimization for various hardware platforms.

5. StethoMe

StethoMe is the first medical diagnostic device of its kind – one that monitors the respiratory system and measures body temperature in a precise but user-friendly way.

PHASE 2 BEGINNT

The Exploration phase of the program has just ended and during the past four weeks all participants could dive into mentoring sessions, networking moments, setting their business/pilot goals and having lots of insights.

We, at SagivTech, are extremely happy with the opportunity to be a part of Batch Zero of the Digital Health Accelerator of Roche, WERK1 and Plug and Play. The mix of great mentors, valuable connections and good advice is unique. The W1 team provides a great back wind for our activities and the intense sessions help us focus and sharpen our product development process. We enjoy excellent facilities, meetings with high rank technological and business leaders and view our participation in the Digital Health Accelerator as a crucial asset!
Chen, Co-Founder of SagivTech

Now, we are currently working in the co-creation phase for the next four months: teams are focused on working with Roche Pilot Owners and other expers in order to bring their use case to the next level.

“Based on startups needs and Roche Pilot Project requirements” we’ve just set up activities for the next phase and we’are happy to to create a bridge between these two worlds and help them to to work together on novel solutions.
Anastasia Stoycheva, Business Development Manager WERK1

At the end of the Co-creation phase, they will present their pilot project during the Demo Day, which takes place on June 7th in Munich.

DIGITAL HEALTH MEETS INSURTECH – MEET THE ARCHITECTS OF OUR FUTURE HEALTHSYSTEM

It’s not often that we start sweating before an event. But for the event “InsurTech meets Digital Health” we were pleasantly surprised at first by the number of registrations, but in the meantime we were afraid that we would not be able to offer space to all interested parties. In the end, however, we presented ourselves once again in WERK1 as a competent host.

INSURTECH MEETS DIGITAL HEALTH

But from the very beginning, InsurTech and Digital Health have a firm place in the WERK1 thanks to our W1>>Forward programs – what could be more obvious than bringing the two worlds together and this is exactly what we did. On February 19th, together with our partners, the InsurTech Hub Munich and Roche, we organized the first official meetup for the digitization of the insurance and healthcare industry at WERK1. With over 350 registrations – including a waiting list of 70 people – we were afraid that we would not be able to accommodate all interested participants. But we didn’t have to turn anyone away, and in the end all of them were accommodated in our event space, which was filled to the last seat.

FROM THE PITCH TO A PANEL DISCUSSION

The stage initially belonged to four up-and-coming startups: Fibricheck, Ottonova, SkinVision, Teleclinic, some well-known names in startup communities and all of them pitched their concepts in front of assembled experts. These came partly from large companies in the industry, but also from potential investors. Short keynotes from Munich Re and Schön Klinik gave an insight into the current challenges facing both sectors. In the following expert panel, moderated by Dr. Dominik Pförringer, Benedikt Zacher – CEO of BK Ventures, Dr. Jochen Hurlebaus – Head of Central R&D Services – Innovation & IP Management at Roche Diagnostics, Carol Wildhagen – CEO and co-founder of Ariana Health and Dr. Regina Vetters – Head of Digital and Innovation bei BARMER discussed the need to digitalise both industries and gave tips on how to be successful in their field of business. All in all, a round program in which almost all those present found themselves in one way or another.

Around 9 p. m. the official program was over and everyone who was present could enjoy a nice round of snacks and drinks. There was also time for networking and direct exchange among each other.

We are looking forward to continue to provide new impulses for the insurance industry and the health care sector from WERK1 with creative startup concepts and a platform for direct exchange. Our WERK1 community can only benefit from this as well.

EVENT FEEDBACK

Thanks to organization via Meetup we got a lot of interesting feedback directly after the event – thank you very much. Here are some excerpts:
