FROM WERK1 ON A BIG TOUR: SMARTLANE PROVIDES THE INTELLIGENT SOLUTION FOR THE LOGISTICS INDUSTRY

When experience, entrepreneurial spirit, the right idea and the necessary know-how from the fields of IT, logistics and transport come together, the framework for a successful digital start-up project is in place – as in the case of Smartlane. Together with a little jump-start from WERK1, it becomes a common success story.

Since mid 2015, the founding team has been developing a solution for automated, digital delivery management. The underlying technology is based on the combined knowledge of more than 20 years of research at the interface between IT and transport at the Technical University of Munich. Smartlane uses Big Data technologies to integrate highly dynamic internal and external data. Routes can thus be optimized in real time – with regard to the resource utilization of the fleet, fuel costs, traffic volume and much more – and drivers can be controlled in a targeted manner. The team’s goal is to establish the standard for modern delivery and service logistics with the most intelligent and user-friendly software. The result is simple and impresses the customers at the same time: Reliably high service quality, sales increase, cost reduction and relieving the employees.

Smartlane’s vision: The complete automation of the logistics industry.
Florian Schimandl, co-founder and managing director of Smartlane:

With its SaaS solution, Smartlane combines maximum automation, outstanding intelligence and state-of-the-art usability in a single product. With our cloud-based software, we offer medium-sized companies in the field of supply logistics the easiest entry into digitalisation. It is possible for our customers to understand the trend of on-demand logistics not as an insurmountable challenge, but as a major and above all sustainable opportunity and to use it profitably.

WELL DEVELOPED AT WERK1

With moving into WERK1 in January 2016, Smartlane also had access to financing coaching – carried out by BayStartUP. Successfully: At the end of 2016, the startup was able to present a successful first financing round by a family office. After the transformation of the UG into a GmbH, the team also expanded – the first employees in the areas of marketing/PR and design/branding were hired and a larger office space at WERK1 was taken up. In addition to the team, the software has also grown and in the middle of 2017 the first version of Smartlane was launched. Even that with success. In the meantime, Smartlane is represented throughout Germany, partner of DER KURIER (the express division of GLS) and also involved in the Deutsche Bahn for the optimization of freight wheel tours. In order to further expand sales and development – and thus grow – a second round of financing is now in the pipeline, which will again be accompanied by BayStartUP.

SMARTLANE AND THE WERK1

At WERK1, Smartlane is a great example of how we want to support ambitious founders in realizing their vision: Attractive and affordable offices of any size and the ability to offer more room for growing businesses in the short term, access to our community and effective coaching to overcome difficulties in the early stages of start-up. But let’s ask the founders of Smartlane themselves:

Why do you have your offices at WERK1 and would you recommend this step to other startups in the digital sector?

Florian Schimandl – CEO Smartland

Florian from Smartlane: Definitely. We can consistently recommend WERK1 and the associated infrastructure. Be it the regularly taking place tasty Werksfrühstück, the offer of workshops and events, the atmosphere in general,… the WERK1 offers in our opinion a great platform for startups to exchange information. Even though the topics of the individual startups in WERK1 are broadly diversified, we still have to realize that the problems are mostly the same and an exchange between them is therefore very valuable. In addition to the exchange of ideas, WERK1 also offers the opportunity to grow – a very important aspect for startups. Therefore we can only agree with the statement “the WERK1 is probably the most startup-friendly place in Munich”.

GLOBAL GAME JAM AT WERK1 – A WORLDWIDE ORGANIZED HACKATRON

Once again the Global Game Jam was on the agenda: a worldwide organized hackatron, where beginners and professionals could develop video games together from Friday to Sunday. The Games/Bavaria team organised the event over the entire weekend at WERK1. A total of 804 locations – networked worldwide – took part in the event. Special highlight: Due to the professional implementation of the live stream, the Munich stream was part of the official live stream of the organizers for several hours and was shown and mentioned several times.

We wold like to thank Games/Bavaria for the professional organization. Some fabulous games have been created that you can see here: Website
A total of 10 partly elaborately planned and executed games have been created.

In 2018, the Global Game Jam was celebrating an anniversary: for ten years now, this special form of creative game development has been taking place around the world once a year. The participants are committed to developing a game and sharing it with the world in 48 hours. The WERK1 was the only event location in Munich – the excitement and enthusiasm of the participants was correspondingly high – an important day for the game developer location Bavaria.

In addition to the technical topics, the mixed teams are an important part of the event. Beginners can work with industry veterans to gain first insights and make important contacts. At the same time, professionals have the chance to think “out of the box” and try out completely new genres or mechanics in addition to their everyday projects. This is certainly one of the main reasons why Global Game Jam has been one of the most popular events of its kind for years.

Thanks to CipsoftElgato we were again able to provide a fully catered venue with 48h Livestream, extracts of which can be found here.

STARTUP-COACHING FOR TEENS WITH MYCHIPSBOX, FLIXBUS & THESIMPLECLUB – VIPS: ILSE AIGNER AND PHILIPP LAHM

This is how we like to see our WERK1: full house and young people, with creative ideas and entrepreneurial ambition in the exchange of experiences with successful startups.

Startup Teens visited WERK1 on January, 22nd 2018 and organized an exclusive meet-up for over 180 invited guests, including around 100 teenagers and startup entrepreneurs from myChipsBox, Flixbus and TheSimpleClub. There were also many prominent guests among the visitors: among others the Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs and Media Ilse Aigner and the former soccer player and today’s entrepreneur Philipp Lahm were there to actively support the event. The young guests were also treated by the social media influencer Diana Löwen.

WERK1 AS EVENT HOST

Philipp Lahm, Ilse Aigner, Hauke Schwiezer, Dr. Florian Mann

Our managing director of WERK1, Dr. Florian Mann, as host he was allowed to open the event and after a short welcome, he was happy about the opportunity at WERK1 to bring young creative minds together with the experience of already successful entrepreneurs.  Because is exactly what he is personally delighted to do and what would be his vision for WERK1: Young entrepreneurs with ambitious ideas for the future under the roof of WERK1, where classic entrepreneurship has been at home for more than half a century and to bring these walls back to life with a digital entrepreneurial spirit.

Afterwards the word went to the founders themselves. Everyone presented their personal motivation to found their own company and which particular challenges they had to master personally and entrepreneurially on the way. Ilse Aigner then advised the young people to “always be curious” and not to fear new challenges and Philipp Lahm turned his back on his sporting career and tried to motivate the young people for big upcoming tasks.

For one more hour, the young people themselves were allowed to ask their entrepreneurial role models questions. Some used this to ask more general questions about the entrepreneurial spirit or the step-by-step set-up of a startup company. Others got very concrete and used the opportunity to present their own ideas to the experts and to get actual tips for further steps. It quickly became clear how digitally versed the young audience was: with topics such as cyrpto currencies or blockchains, the full digital expertise of the experts was in demand. In this context, Ms. Aigner pointed out the importance of digital incubators in Bavaria, such as WERK1: There, there would be the appropriate offers to seek support such as coaching or mentoring for your own startup project.

With drinks and relaxed networking in the café of WERK1, the first joint event of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Startup Teens Initiative came to an end. We at WERK1 are happy that we could be their hosts.

FROM WERK1 INTO THE SUPERMARKET: MYCHIPSBOX TELLS ITS SUCCESS STORY

Many startups start with a personal problem of the founders. For this reason, Erol and Ebru Kaynak from myChipsBox have also started their mission to change the world of crisps in a sustainable way: Disappointed by the offer in their local supermarket, the couple took the initiative and developed their own range of high-quality crisps – only the best organic ingredients and a lot of creativity in the recipes. Unwanted ingredients such as glutamate or yeast extract can’t be found in these crisps. Just pure taste of the meticulously selected ingredients. Depending on the variety, you will find not only the classic crips but also vegetable or fruit chips in the box, which provides a special kick of taste.

The box itself is also part of the new generation of crips: every good product requires modern marketing and a sales idea. Instead of the usual bag, the crisps are protected from outside pressure in the practical box and during a cinema evening with friends, they are practically noiseless nibbling fun. The result is a modern “Bio-Chips-Duette”, matching the current spirit, stunningly crispy, exciting and delicious.

But it was a long way: 88 failures had to be coped with for 12 tasty variations. But failure is also part of success. The two founders know this from many years of experience. Both are proven experts on their fields and together a perfect team: Ebru, as food technician and ecotrophologist, ensures that the highest quality standards are maintained, while Erol, as a business graduate and former investment banker, controls sales and finances.

“DIE HÖHLE DER LÖWEN”
(SHARK TANK)

During a TV presence in the program “Die Höhle der Löwen” (German version of the US-Show Shark Tank), the young startup company was able to present itself and its crisps to an audience of millions and thus quickly raise its brand awareness nationwide. They managed to inspire three of the five lions for their product: The decision was made for the retail expert Ralf Dümmel, who provided financial and professional support after the show.

MYCHIPSBOX AT WERK1

In the premises of the old “Werksviertel” in the middle of Munich, the team works directly next to the old potato track and continues the tradition in its own way.

And at WERK1, the young company is still on the road to success. Together with the two founders, 10 people create unique moments of joy every day. Together they bring the founders’ vision of creating more variety on the crisp shelf to live. And this mission is not yet complete. From the creation of further varieties to the production of own ingredients, the startup still has great goals.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! INSURTECH HUB AT INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR DIA

Numerous highly informative discussions, intensive exchanges and close contacts to both existing and potential partners: The Digital Insurance Agenda (DIA) congress, at which InsurTech Hub Munich e.V. presented itself as one of the trade fair partners, was a great event for the network. “Once again we showed how attractive Munich is for InsurTech companies. It is impressive to see that participants from all industries, big reinsurers  and insurers, start-ups, tech companies, journalists and politicians agree and say: we will make the insurance industry more digital and we will do it together” , Tom Van den Brulle, 1st Chairman of InsurTech Hub, has a thoroughly positive track record.

No fewer than 1,000 decision makers from 42 countries around the world, from Australia to Canada and from Argentina to Japan, transformed the third edition of the DIA into a superlative InsurTech event. One of the highlights was undoubtedly the appearance of Daniel Schreiber, founder of Lemonade and a kind of Steve Jobs in the InsurTech industry. But the numerous lectures by other start-up founders also captivated the audience.

The good mood was also reflected in the atmosphere at the InsurTech Hub booth. Top-class guests and conversations shaped the two DIA days. International investors looking for innovative start-ups, as well as Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs Ilse Aigner, learned about the ideas for the future on site. Another highlight was the demo day of the W1 Forward InsurTech Accelerator. The five start-ups of the second batch presented themselves to the professional audience and received a lot of praise. The feedback collected clearly showed that InsurTech Hub Munich has found its firm position as the leading InsurTech network.

FURTHER STATEMENTS

“Pairing up the Demo Day of our W1 Forward Accelerator program with DIA provided our startups with an exceptional platform. They were able to present their products to an audience of more than 1,000 highly targeted InsurTech experts. As a result they’ve got extremely valuable contacts to investors, corporate partners, industry leaders as well as international peer startups. All this reflects very nicely what the InsurTech Hub Munich and WERK1 are all about: connecting the dots”.

Dr. Florian Mann, CEO WERK1

“InsurTech Hub Munich and DIA: What a great event where many new insurance ideas have come into our view. We are completely satisfied. The live presentations as well as the direct exchange were great. 35 business cards and about 50 vital discussions at the stand are the best witnesses. ”
Andreas Gensch, CEO und Co-founder treefin AG

“We deliberately chose Munich as the venue for the DIA. According to our database, Munich is already the de facto Insurtech capital of the world. With the now participating Insurtech Hub Munich, it is certain that the central position will be further expanded. ”
Roger Peverelli und Reggy De Feniks, DIA Gründer

SUCCESSFUL WORK AT THE W1 FORWARD INSURTECH ACCELERATOR: RECAP OF THE DEMO DAY 2016

Just a couple of months ago five finalists began their hard and very successful work at the W1 Forward InsurTech Accelerator. As you might remember, the W1 Forward InsurTech Accelerator is hosted at WERK1 and supported by  insurance companies, namely Allianz, ARAG, Die Bayerische, Generali, HUK-Coburg, LV1871, Munich RE, Nürnberger, Swiss RE, VKB.

So no wonder the Technikum, just a few steps away from WERK1, was crowded by some illustrious guests from bavarian politics, top executives from the insurance industry and of course a lot of founders and startup people. More than 150 guests were welcomed at the first ‚W1 Forward InsurTech Demo Day‘ excited to see what the startups were about to present.

After a short and enjoyable speech highlighting the ’small wonder‘ of bringing together the supposedly old fashioned insurance industry with fast paced and agile startups, Franz Glatz welcomed Bavarian Minister of Economics Ilse Aigner and the co-initiators on the stage. She ran through a short, but pithy speech about Bavaria having the right, if not the best ecosystem for founders and startups.

This was followed by more speeches: First there were Dr. Robert Heene of VKB and Torsten Jeworrek of Munich Re. Who were involved in the very early days of the W1 Forward InsurTech Accelerator. Again it was about the culture clash between the slow moving insurance world and the vivid startup scene. However, as Dr. Heene pointed out, the industry is learning fast: It took just ten days from the first draft to the final proof of the W1 Forward InsurTech contract. They also enjoyed working with the startups in workshops and mentoring.

Finally, Bavarian State Secretary Franz Josef Pschierer shared his current mission of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs: Driving forward the digitization of society and economy by – among others – creating the best environment for startups. He stated our work and how initiatives such as W1 Forward Accelerators help creating those environments.

Eventually the stage was for the startups and with the first pitch the highlight of the evening started. We’ve noted down a short recap and quotes.

Snapsure

WERK1 - Alumni - snapsure - Logo

What they pitched: An insurance bot and an AI platform which allows the insurance industry to generate customized and instant offers based on image informations. Insurers can integrate Snapsures white label API into their front ends like customer apps, broker apps, marketplaces, interactive ad banners or sales campaigns.

Best quote on stage: ‚Insurances are complicated, incomprehensible, old-fashioned and unsexy. We want to change this with Snapsure!‘

Minnosphere

What they pitched: A ‚Next Generation Underwriting‘ (NGUW) System which simplifes and improves the existing insurance underwriting processes. The innovative solution combines the power of machine learning algorithms and business rules. The aim of NGUW is to convert big data into automatic decisions.

Best quote on stage: ‚Finally, when you managed to get an Insurance, then we should call it a relationship. But i dare to say, that insurances don’t have relationships with their customers and vice versa.

MotionsCloud

WERK1 - Resident - MotionsCloud - Logo

What they pitched: A mobile and artificial intelligence claims solutions for non-life insurers and claims handling companies with the aim to reduce claim cycle time, claim expenses and and also to improve customer experience at the point of claim. A customer centric mobile AI solution to settle insurance claims that meet the customer expectations in the digital world.

Best quote on stage: ‚The point of claim is the point of pain!

Leonhard-MacDonald Ventures

What they pitched: A B2B SaaS solution called AdaEngine. A lightning fast real-time big data analysis and prediction tool. The AdaEngine turns insurance and financial analysts into data scientists by enabling them to build AI powered real-time modelling and simulation applications from Excel spreadsheets.

Best quote on stage:‚Our future gives you the latest Big Data technologies and advanced AI and Machine Learning algorithms to make your prediction and forecasting easier and more fun and more timely.‘

Nect – Smart Digital Identity

What they pitched: Nect, a single, verifed digital ID for customers which will be globally usable across insurers, to securely log in, sign up, send or receive encrypted Data and also making one click insurance possible. But Nect also aims for other industries which shall lead to data transaction possibilities across industries, opening up ways for new business opportunities and innovative insurance products.

Best quote on stage:‚I can say it in an other way: I can‘t remember all these shitty passwords. Do you know the most used menu point on customer care portals? Yes, it’s ‚I forgot my password!‘‘

So what is the conclusion? Well, all pitches were remarkably professional and everyone agreed that the five finalists are bound to be successful.

And how did the startups benefit besides coachings and support of the accelerator? During the Q&A session after the pitches all startups seemed to agree on one point: Without the W1 Forward InsurTech Accelerator they would never ever have gotten the deep industry contacts they acquired during the last few months. This alone seemed to be worth it.

Of course there was more than just speeches and pitches. Afterwards there was enough time for having a drink or two and of course for networking. Also each of the five finalists had a small booth where visitors could watch demos of the various solutions and have chat with the founders. At the end everyone experienced an interesting and valuable evening.
